Sinner Maker Beginner Guide

Sinner Maker dropped on Steam Early Access on June 5, 2026, blending a Mii-style character creator with colony simulation and dark religious themes. In this guide, we walk through everything a new player needs — from your first character to surviving the full 100-day challenge. Whether you play in browser or on Steam, these tips apply to both versions.

The game puts you in charge of up to 100 sinners after the Rapture. Your goal: build a functioning community, manage their physical and spiritual needs, and endure 100 days to earn salvation. It sounds simple, but the sin system, relationship mechanics, and resource management layer on serious depth.

1. Start With Character Creation — The Seven Deadly Sins Matter

Every character you create inherits sin traits based on their physical appearance. A round, chubby character scores high in Gluttony — their food need drains twice as fast. Sharp eyebrows and intense eyes boost Wrath, making them prone to starting fights. An upright, refined posture signals Pride, and the character will refuse basic wooden beds.

Here is how each sin affects gameplay:

Gluttony — Rapid food decay. These sinners hoard favorite foods and starve weaker sinners around them.

Wrath — Low social tolerance. They pick fights constantly and generate Enemy status rapidly.

Pride — High housing demands. They reject basic furnishings and require luxury items.

Sloth — Slow movement speed. They refuse labor and may not walk across the map to Church.

Lust — Hyperactive social need. They form rapid crushes and trigger jealousy and infidelity cascades.

Envy — Conditional need decay. Their social need drops when other sinners receive gifts.

Greed — High resource consumption. They hoard firewood and food, especially during Winter.

Tip: Build your first characters with balanced traits. Avoid maxing out any single sin until you understand how it affects daily management. A high-Gluttony character can drain your entire food stock if you are not prepared.

2. Faith Is Your Most Important Resource

Faith acts as the stabilizer for your entire society. When a sinner's Faith meter stays high, their base sin traits are suppressed. When Faith drops, the sin takes over — a high-Pride character with zero Faith will instantly demand a better house and refuse to sleep until they get it.

Build a Church early and place it centrally so Sloth-heavy characters do not have to walk far. Schedule regular visits before any Faith meter turns red. Faith also accelerates mood recovery, so keeping faith high prevents cascading behavioral problems.

Pro tip: Group high-Faith and high-Lust characters near the Church center. They form positive social bonds faster, creating a buffer of high Social scores that keeps the village stable during resource shortages.

3. Housing Logic — Know What Changed in June 2026

The infamous bed bug plagued Sinner Maker at launch. Sinners would stand in a fully furnished room and constantly demand a house or a bed, creating an infinite negative loop. This was fixed in the Studies Rework patch (June 8, 2026). Housing allocation now properly satisfies the need.

Build one bed per sinner before expanding. A wooden bed satisfies basic housing need. Upgrade housing only after food and faith are stable. Ensure every colonist has a designated bed to prevent the Homeless debuff, which causes mood to spiral downward rapidly.

Also note: Houses consume firewood during Winter. If you expand housing too fast without stockpiling wood, your entire village may freeze during the cold months.

4. Food and Farming

Food production is the backbone of your colony. The June 12 Deuteronomy II patch fixed critical issues with cooking and cropfields. Cooking now produces food reliably, and cropfields are balanced to generate a steady supply.

Rules of thumb:

Plant cropfields first, before building any decoration. A sinner with zero Food enters a starvation state that boosts their Wrath score, making them steal from other colonists and sever friendships.

Build a kitchen and assign cooking labor early. Restaurants can feed sinners automatically without manual intervention — this was fixed in the June 12 update.

Match food to sin preferences. A generic meal restores a fraction of the Food need, but favorite foods provide a massive buff that temporarily halts the decay timer.

Stockpile before Winter. Houses consume double firewood in Winter, and unharvested crops die. Use hunting to supplement food when farms freeze.

5. Relationships and Social Management

Sinners form relationships through proximity and repeated interactions. They can become friends, rivals, worshippers, or obsessive fixations. High Social scores buffer the village against resource shortages, while low Social scores trigger fighting.

Use Circles (the game's zone system) to control who interacts with whom. Isolate high-Wrath characters in a separate housing block on the outskirts. Group positive characters together to accelerate friendship bonds.

Watch for obsession loops — high-Lust characters can form rapid, obsessive attachments that cause jealousy cascades. Split them across different Circles to distribute the social load.

6. Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Resource Mismanagement. New players spread resources too thin. Prioritize food and faith before expanding housing or luxury items.

Mistake #2: Neglecting Sinner Needs. Every sinner has unique needs (hunger, thirst, shelter, safety, social interaction). Use the character profile screen to check individual needs, not just the village overview.

Mistake #3: Ignoring Emerging Problems. Fires, disease, and social unrest escalate fast. If you see a problem indicator, address it immediately — the cascade effect can wipe out hours of progress.

Mistake #4: Forgetting to Export Saves. Browser storage can be cleared by updates, browser settings, or device cleanup. Export save codes regularly, especially after major progress milestones.

Mistake #5: Ignoring Soul Saving. The ultimate goal is surviving 100 days and saving your soul. Keep this target in mind when allocating resources. Every decision should move you closer to Day 100.

7. Build Order Priority — What to Build First

Your first day sets the tone for the whole run. Follow this build order:

1. Church — Faith stabilization from Day 1.

2. Cropfields — Secure food production immediately.

3. Basic housing (wooden beds) — One bed per starting sinner.

4. Kitchen — Enable cooking for reliable food output.

5. Workshop — Unlock tools and upgrades.

Expand only after the basics are self-sustaining. A smaller stable village beats a large starving one every time.

8. Platform Differences — Browser vs Steam

Sinner Maker is available both on Steam (Early Access, $9.66) and as a free browser build on Itch.io. The browser version is the easiest way to try the game, but it lacks cloud saves and receives updates slightly later than Steam.

The Steam version offers automatic updates, cloud saves, Workshop support (mods), and a more stable experience. If you enjoy the game, buying it on Steam supports the developer Pantokrator directly and unlocks the full update pipeline.
